...คือเหตุผลที่ทำไมคนถึงไม่อยากซื้อ Windows ก็จะเสียตังค์ตั้ง 4,000 กว่าๆ 5,000 บาท ซื้อของแท้มาทำไมละครับในเมื่อท้ายที่สุดแล้วก็ถูกหาว่าใช้ของผิดกฏหมายอยู่ดี

ข่าวล่าสุดจาก The INQUIRER รายงานว่าผู้ใช้งาน Windows (ถูกกฏหมาย) หลายรายไม่สามารถที่จะดาวโหลดอัพเดทจากทางเว็ปไซด์ของ Microsoft ได้

ซึ่งสาเหตุก็มาจากปัญหาเกี่ยวกับตัวโปรแกรม Windows Genuine Advantage (แปลเป็นไทยแบบสั่วๆ ได้ว่า "ประโยชน์ของการใช้/เป็นเจ้าของ Windows อย่างถูกกฏหมาย) ที่ใช้เช็คว่า Windows ที่คุณใช้นั้นเป็นของถูกกฏหมายรึเปล่านั้นเอง โดยผู้ใช้งานหลายคนรายงานว่าไม่สามารถทำการ validation (ยืนยันว่า Windows ที่ใช้นั้นถูกกฏหมาย) ได้ จึงทำให้ไม่สามารถดาวโหลดอัพเดทจากทางเว็ปไซด์ของ Microsoft ได้

ข่าวนี้ก็คงจะสร้างความขายหน้าให้กับ Microsoft อีกครั้ง หลังจากที่เคยมีข่าวไม่นานมานี้ว่า server ที่ใช้ทำการ activate Windows นั้นล่ม ทำให้ผู้ที่ซื้อ Windows มาอย่างถูกกฏหมายไม่สามารถที่จะใช้งาน Windows ได้ หรือในบางกรณีก็ถูกหาว่าใช้ Windows เวอร์ชั่นผิดกฏหมายเลยทีเดียว

จะทำระบบป้องกันการถูกก็อบอะไรก็ทำไปเถอะครับ แต่ถ้าทำให้ลูกค้าที่เสียเงินซื้อสินค้าเราไปเดือนร้อนแบบนี้นี่ ผมว่ามันไม่น่าจะเวิร์คนะ

ไม่ได้ post ซะนานเลย (หายหน้าไปตั้งเดือนแนะ :P ) จริงๆ แล้วผมกำลังเขียนบทความหนึ่งที่ตั้งใจว่าถ้าเสร็จแล้วจะเอามา post อยู่ แต่พอดีอัพเดท Openoffice เป็นเวอร์ชั่น 2.3 แล้วเจอ Bug นี้เข้าเต็มๆ ทำให้ไม่สามารถเปิดไฟล์เอกสารได้ ทำเอาเซ็งจิตไปพักใหญ่เหมือนกัน แถมดันมีเพื่อนมาขอให้ช่วยแปลงานให้อีก (อะไรจะประจวบเหมาะขนาดนี้) เลยต้องเอา Tomboy มาใช้เป็น Word processor แก้ขัดไปก่อน (ก็พอถูไถนะ)

ช่วงนี้ผมกำลังเรียนภาษางูด้วยตัวเองอยู่ (จริงๆ แล้วก็อยากเรียน C/C++ ด้วยแหละ แต่ยังหาเวปไซด์ที่สอน C/C++ ดีๆ ไม่ได้ ใครพอรู้ก็ช่วยแนะนำหน่อยนะครับ :-) ) แล้วก็กำลังเตรียมจะสมัครต่อโทฯ ด้วย (มหาลัยไหนแล้วแต่ดวง :-D ) ไปสอบ TUGET & CUTEP มาแล้ว ที่เหลือก็แค่รอไปสอบของคณะ (ไอ้นี้แหละที่หนักใจ) ไว้จะมาเล่าให้ฟังนะครับว่าผลเป็นไงบ้าง

Too much freedom?

Not long ago I blogged that MICT lifted its ban on YouTube. Well, it turns out that not only did they stop blocking YouTube, they also unblock other websites that previously have been blocked as well.

Other than YouTube, Thailand have been banning various websites for quite a while. Aside from obvious target such as pornography sites, other websites such as Bittorrent tracker, proxy server and various anonymity software websites have also been on the banning list. This, however, is no longer the case, as all of the banned sites can now be accessed directly without any use of proxy or tunneling.

While this may seems like a good news and a cause for celebration, this is not the first time that 'the powers that be' lifts its ban on the internet. The last time that G-man lifted the ban was way back in late 2006 (I don't remember the exact date). The lift was only temporary, however, as the authorities quickly, and quietly, going on a banning spree not long afterward, banning the same websites that it had blocked before and adding more sites to the list (even imageshack got banned, for some reason). And don't forget that, before YouTube got banned for almost 4 months, YouTube was inaccessible due to 'technical glitches' for a couple of days, despite the fact that during that time it was perfectly accessible using proxy network. (Coincident? You decided).

So, who knows what will happen this time? Maybe they'll stop blocking these websites (and more) for real. Maybe they are just waiting for... something, before resuming their self-righteous crusade again.

Only time will tell, it seems.

I have never been so proud of my country before. :-) Thanks to all those involve in the voting process. It's really glad to see Thailand did not falls into Microsoft lobbying campaign.

But it is not over yet, because there will be another round of voting in the early next year. But for now, it is good to see that yes, there is still something in this world that money cannot buy. :D

เห็นข่าวจาก Blognone ครับ ตอนนี้ (22:08 นาฬิกา) ก็สามารถเข้าดู YouTube ได้ตามปกติไม่มีปัญหา โดยทาง YouTube ได้สัญญาว่าจะให้ความร่วมมือในการบล๊อกผู้ใช้จากไทยไม่ให้ดูวิดิโอบางอันที่ขัดต่อกฏหมายไทย

ถือว่าเป็นข่าวดีสำหรับชาวเน็ทไทยนะครับ ที่ในที่สุดปัญหานี้ก็จบซะที :-)

Students translated the final Harry Potter book hours after its publication and months ahead of the official Chinese version, state media reports.

The first Chinese version of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows appeared on the internet on 21 July, the day of the English version's global release.

China Daily quoted blogs saying fans "worked in teams and round the clock, eating nothing but instant noodles".

The official Chinese print version is due to be published in October.

และสุดท้ายแต่ไม่ท้ายสุด ผม Upload บทความ Pirating Windows ขึ้นไปที่ Everything2.com (เปลี่ยนชื่อเป็น Why most people in Thailand won't pay for Windows) เพื่อที่จะดูซิว่าฝีมือการเขียนภาษาปะกิจของเรานั้นเข้าขั้นแล้วรึยัง

ปรากฏว่ายังห่างชั้นอย่างแรง โดนฝรั่งวิจารณ์ (ปนด่า) ซะเละ ที่ผิดเยอะก็ยังเป็นเรื่องเดิมๆ (Grammar) แต่ตั้งแต่ Firefox มี Build-in Spell Checker นี่ ปัญหาเรื่องสะกดคำอังกฤษผิดนี่ลดลงไปเยอะ (แต่ภาษาไทยก็ยังสะกดผิดอยู่เหมือนเดิม :P ) ตอนนี้ก็ทยอยแก้ไปเรื่อยๆ จนตอนนี้แทบจะไม่มีเค้าเดิมแล้ว ยังไงก็ลองตามไปอ่านกันดูนะครับ ว่าแก้แล้วดีขึ้นหรือแย่ลง ^_^

Pirating Windows

Thailand have a long history of rampage software piracy, especially Windows. Eight out of ten people here use pirated copy of Windows. (The other two got a legitimate copy that comes with their machine.) Everyone use at least one pirated software (most popular being Microsoft Office). Nobody cares.

The question is, why?

The answer is simple: Windows is simply too expensive and the pirated version is working well enough for most people.

Most people in Thailand who have computer typically use a pirated copy of Microsoft Windows. That's the fact around here. Even big retail outlets typically install a pirated copy of Windows on blank machines that they are selling. Hell, they even openly admitted about the fact that they are using a pirated version of Windows on their machine. (One salesperson I met told me outright that the machine he sells is running a pirated version of Windows).

As a result, most people never even knew, or care, how much a copy of Windows would cost. Well, I must admit that I used to be one of those people. I mean, why should one care how much a legitimate copy of Windows cost if you can get a pirated one for around 150 bath (about 3.75 dollar) that roughly have the same functionalities as the legitimate one?

Out of curiosity, I begin looking around for information . As of August 2007 a copy of Windows XP Pro edition (OEM license) would cost you around 5,100 to 5,300 bath (127.5 to 132.5 dollar depending on vendor). A copy of Windows Vista Business edition (OEM license) cost about 5,400 to 6,000 bath (135 to 150 dollar). As for a copy of Windows Vista Ultimate edition (OEM license), the price is set at around 7,300 bath (182.5 dollar) or more. (A typical salary for newly undergraduate around here is about 10,000 to 15,000 bath (250 to 375 dollar)).

Now that is a lot more than a 150 bath. Don't you agree? Not to mention that each license can only be use on one PC. So if you have, say, two computers you need to buy two copies of Windows for each machine. Not only that, but according to OEM license, if somehow your computer suddenly shiver up and die and you have to replace it with a new machine You have to buy a new copy of Windows to use on the new machine, no matter how long (or short) you just brought your previous copy of Windows. (Sure, you can go with Full Package license and have the privilege to reinstall your copy of Windows on the new machine but then the price would be even higher).

Now that is just silly.

And for all that troubles, what do you get? A warm, fuzzy feeling that you have done the right thing (although that is a highly subjective matter), and a working Windows update service.

In short, not much. Especially considered the fact that a 150 bath pirated copy can do everything a full fledge version can, except using Windows update service (which most people never use or care about anyway).

With a deal like that, it is no surprise that nobody is buying Windows. The benefits one gets is simply not enough to justify the cost. If Microsoft is really, really serious about reducing or eliminating software piracy here, the first thing that it can do is to lower the cost of Windows.

Yes, it is just as simple as that.

(And if you really can't or don't want to pay for Windows, then there are other alternatives such as Linux or *BSD. So no need to use pirated version of Windows and risk getting virus, malware or spyware).

เมื่อวันที่ 20 ที่ผ่านมาได้ลั่นวาจาไว้ว่าจะต้องเรียน TCP/IP protocol และการติดตั้ง ปรับแต่งและใช้งาน Firewall ใน Linux ให้ได้ภายใน 6 วัน

เอาเข้าจริงก็ใช้เวลาแค่วันเดียวในการอ่าน ทำความเข้าใจ และติดตั้งใช้งาน Firewall บน (Arch) Linux :)

จำได้เพราะว่าวันถัดมาก็ไปนั้งอ่านหนังสือ Harry Potter เล่ม 7 สบายใจเฉิบแล้ว :P

ถึงแม้จะทำการ setting Firewall ให้ใช้งานได้และมีความเข้าใจ TCP/IP protocol และการทำงานของ IP filtering Firewall มากขึ้นกว่าเดิมก็ตาม แต่ก็ต้องยอมรับว่ายังมีส่วนที่ไม่เข้าใจอยู่เยอะมาก โดยเฉพาะรายละเอียดที่เกี่ยวข้องกับ TCP/IP protocol

เอานะแต่ถึงยังไงก็ถือว่าสำเร็จตามความตั้งไจไป 70 % แล้วกัน

อืม... อาทิตย์นี่ทำอะไรต่อดีนา?

On July 20, I said that I would learn TCP/IP protocol and how to config, install and using Firewall on Linux in 6 days.

It turns out that I only spent one day to read, learn and install a working firewall on (Arch) Linux. :)

I remember because I spent the next day reading Harry Potter volume 7. :P

Even thou I manage to setup a working firewall and gain a lot more understanding on TCP/IP protocol and the inner working of IP filtering firewall, there are a lot of stuffs that I still don't understand, especially concerning the TCP/IP protocol.

Still, I would considered this a (partial) success. ;)

Hmmm... I wonder what should I do next this week?

อัพเดท: ผมเปลี่ยนจาก Ubuntu มาใช้ Arch Linux เวอร์ชั้น 64 บิตตั้งแต่วันที่ 12 กรกฎาคมที่ผ่านมา

บอกได้คำเดียวว่าเกินความคาดหมาย Arch นั้นเร็ว มีขนาดเล็ก และง่ายต่อการปรับแต่งแก้ไขกว่าที่ผมคิดไว้มาก

แน่ละการติดตั้งและปรับแต่ง Arch นั้นยุ่งยากกว่า Ubuntu แต่นั้นก็เป็นเรื่องที่รู้ๆ กันอยู่ (จริงๆ แล้วมันก็เหมือนได้อย่างเสียอย่างละนะ: ติดตั้งและปรับแต่งง่าย = ผู้ใช้มีการควบคุมน้อย / ติดตั้งและปรับแต่งยาก = ผู้ใช้มีการควบคุมมาก)

แต่ถ้าจะถามว่าสิ่งที่ดีที่สุดที่ผมได้จากการใช้ Arch คืออะไร ก็คงจะต้องตอบว่าคือความรู้และความเข้าใจถึงการทำงานของระบบ Linux สมัยใหม่ (ขอบคุณพระเจ้าสำหรับ HAL และ Dbus)

An update: I've switched from Ubuntu to Arch Linux 64 bit edition since around July 12. It is everything that I hope it would be, and more. Fast. Lightweight. Customizable to the smallest degree.

Sure the setup and configuration is harder than Ubuntu, but that was to be expected (kind of a trade-off really: easier to install and setup = less control / harder to install and setup = more control.)

And the best thing that I got from using Arch? The understanding of how modern Linux system work. (HAL & Dbus, I love you both.)

อ่านจบแล้ว! ใช่เวลาประมาณ 12 ชั่วโมง (2 ทุ่ม วันเสาร์ ถึง แปดโมงเช้าวันอาทิตย์) กะอีกประมาณ 4 ชั่วโมง (6 โมงเย็นถึง สี่ทุ่ม (22 นาฬิกา) วันอาทิตย์) เบ็ดเสร็จก็ประมาณ 16-17 ชั้วโมง

จริงๆ ก็อยากจะโต้รุ่งอ่านให้จบในทีเดียวละนะ แต่ไม่ไหว (ง่วง) เลยต้องไปนอนก่อนแล้วค่อยตื่นมาอ่านต่อ

ความรู้สึกส่วนตัวสรุปสั้นๆ: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows ทำให้ผมกลายเป็นแฟนของ Harry Potter อีกครัง ไม่เสียใจเลยที่อ่านมาจนจบ ดีกว่าเล่ม 5 และเล่ม 6 ที่ผ่านมามาก เป็นหนึ่งในหนังสือน้อยเล่มที่อ่านตั่งแต่ดึกจนตะวันขึ้นได้โดยไม่รู้ตัว (อารมณ์แบบ: เฮ้ย! เช้าแล้วรึ!)

ปัญหาของผมก็คือเป็นคนที่มีสมาธิค่อนข้างสั้น และทำอะไรก็ไม่ค่อยมีเป้าหมาย (แถมยังขี้เกียจอีกตะหาก) ผลก็คือเวลาผมทำอะไรก็จะทำแบบครึ่งๆ กลางๆ (เล่นเกมส์ก็เล่นไม่จบ อ่านหนังสือก็อ่านไม่จบ ฯลฯ) ทำไปซักพักพอเบื่อก็จะเปลี่ยนไปทำอย่างอื่น

ผลก็คือผมได้เล่นเกมส์และอ่านหนังสือเยอะแยะหลากหลายมาก แต่ก็มีน้อยเล่ม/เกมส์นักที่จะเล่น/อ่านจนจบ (หนังและดนตรีไม่ค่อยมีปัญหานี้เพราะมันกินเวลาไม่นานนัก มากสุดก็สามชั่วโมง)

สรุปง่ายๆ ก็คือเป็นคนทำอะไรไม่ค่อยเป็นชิ้นเป็นอัน

แต่ปัญหาหนักที่สุดก็คือผมเป็นคนที่รู้อะไรตื้นเกินไป ซึ่งน่าเสียดายมากถ้าคิดถึงเวลาที่ผมเสีย/ให้ไปกับแต่ละกิจกรรม (หนังสือบางเล่มอ่านไปเกือบครึ่งก็เลิกอ่านไปซะงั้น)

ต่อแต่นี้ไปไม่เอาอีกแล้ว โดยเริ่มจากวันนี้เป็นต้นไปผมจะสัญญากับตัวเองว่า ภายในเวลาหนึ่งอาทิตย์จะต้องทำอะไรก็ได้ให้สำเร็จเป็นชิ้นเป็นอันอย่างน้อยหนึ่งอย่าง

เริ่มเลยตั้งแต่วันนี้กับการเรียนเกี่ยวกับ TCP/IP protocol และการติดตั้ง ปรับแต่งและใช้งาน Firewall ใน Linux

เจอกันในอีก 6 วันนะครับ :)

ในที่สุดหลังจากปลำ้มาทั้งคืน ข้าพเจ้าก็ลง Ubuntu Feisty Fawn บนเครื่อง laptop ยี่ห้อ Acer รุ่น Aspire 5551 AWXMi สำเร็จแล้ว!

ฮุๆๆๆ ฮึๆๆ กร๊ากกกๆๆๆ! (บ้าไปแล้ว)

สุดยอดแห่งความทรหด นั่งปลำ้มาตั้งแต่บ่ายของเมื่อวาน เริ่มตั้งแต่การด์เจอไม่ support แถม net ก็ใชไม่ได้ สรุปก็ต้องลากกลับมาต่อสาย LAN ที่บ้าน (แต่ตอนแรกโง่นึกว่าเครื่องมันไม่มี port LAN เสียเวลาไปตั้งนาน)

ตอนแรกเกือบจะไม่ได้ลง Feisty Fawn แล้ว เพราะมัน boot เข้า X window ไม่ได้ (ก็ไอ้ปัญหากะการ์ดจอนี่แหละ)

แต่ตอนนี้ก็ใช้งานได้ปกติแล้ว (อืม... จิงๆ ต้องเรียกว่าเกือบปกติดีกว่ามั้ง? เพราะกล้องก็ยังใช้งานไม่ได้ (จิงๆ ก็ใช้ได้แหละแต่ภาพมันสีเพ้ียนอย่างแรง) แถมลำโพงตัวนอกก็ไม่มีเสียง (แต่ใช้หูฟังได้นะ)

ขอตัวไปนอนก่อน เดี๋ยวตื่นแล้วค่อยมาเล่าต่อ ตอนนี้เอา screen shot ไปดูก่อนละกัน

I spend almost an hour (including time taken to download Avant Window Navigator) on this and the result is quite satisfying (at least to me ;) ).

The more I read about Arch Linux, the more I was interested by it. The facts that it was very lightweight (bare bone might be more appropriate here) and highly customizable is what intrigue me.

Sure, it won't be as easy as Ubuntu, but the ability to config every parts of your system, down to the smallest details, is tempting. I'll try it out on virtual machine and see how it goes.

And the truth shall set you free!

Why I left

Some of you, my friends, might ask why I stopped using Windows (and what I'm using now). To answer the first question as to why I abandoned Windows, have a look at these screen shots of my desktop:

Yes, that is a true 3D desktop you're seeing and before you ask, no, that is not Windows Vista new feature.

Nothing, be it Windows XP/Vista or Mac OS X, can do this.

These are screen shots from my Linux desktop, running a piece of compositing window manager software called Beryl (now called Compiz Fusion).

Yes, Linux.

I'm now using GNU/Linux (or more commonly known as 'Linux'), specifically a Ubuntu GNU/Linux distribution. The reasons I'm now using Linux, other than the cool 3D desktop you've seen above, is that Linux satisfies all of my needs. I can use it to surf the net, listen to musics, watching movies, writing documents, playing games, etc., all without having to worry or deal with virus, spyware, malware and other issues that usually plagues Windows.

What is Linux? Well, in short, it's an OS just like Windows or Mac OS. The main differences between Linux and Windows is that Linux is free (as in freedom). You can download, use and modify it in anyway (in contrast to Windows, where you didn't even 'own' the software that you buy, you just sort of 'lease' it, according to Windows EULA).

Not only Linux is freely available (meaning that you didn't have to pay, at minimum, 2,700 bath for Windows XP, 5,000 to 10,000 bath for Windows Vista or 100 to 250 bath for a pirated copy of XP/Vista) but Linux is more secure than Windows. For example, Windows's virus, malware and spyware cannot infect or hurt Linux (in fact you can even open some infected files, such as word document, in Linux without causing any harm!). This eliminated the need for anti virus software and the like (thus freeing your system resources for other, more productive tasks).

Other advantages of Linux is that it uses less resources than the bloated Windows while retains the same level of functionality as Windows and more. See the screen shots above? With all that effects turn on it only used about 250-290 MB of RAM and require only intel graphic card to work. With Vista you'll need at least 1 gig of RAM or more (2 gig is recommended), with a latest (=expensive) NVIDIA/ATI graphic card to have a decent frame rate.

Also, in case of Ubuntu (and most other distributions), Linux comes packed with all the essential applications such as word processor (OpenOffice) internet messenger (Gaim), movie player (MPlayer), etc., and the best thing is (in Ubuntu) all of the application support Thai language right out of the box! You don't have to spent 7,000 to 15,000 bath for Microsoft Office (or pay about 100 to 200 bath for a pirated one) or any other software because all you need is already included in a single CD install and all the software included is freeware/opensource released under GPL, meaning it will always remain freely available (just as Linux is) so you don't have to worry about author of a software suddenly start charging money for their software.

Of course, Linux has it's own downside. The first obvious one is that most Windows applications won't work on Linux. (there are attempt to make them work, but there's still a long way to go). This also means that most games that run on Windows won't work with Linux, so if you're hardcore gamer who want to play the latest, greatest game, then Linux might not be for you, yet.

The second issue is that Linux supports less hardware than Windows, this is because currently there are far fewer people using Linux than Windows, so most hardware providers decided not to provide driver for Linux. The third is that in order to use it, you must be ready to read, a lot. Some people might get discouraged by the fact that most document/tutorial available is only in English, most of the time. The last downside is that you'll need to familiarize yourself with it (since it is quite different than Windows). This of course takes time and effort, but nothing too hard for those who wishes to try.

Most people in Thailand never heard of Linux. Those that do often see it as being 'old' or 'DOS-like' (because it's command line interface) and dismissed it as useless or obsolete. These attitudes cannot be further from the truth! Linux have come a long way since Redhat Linux first come out in 1994-1995 and today can stands on it's own as an alternative to Windows as a OS for desktop computer.

So if you are bored with all the viruses, malwares, spywares and all the hazards/issues on Windows, want a OS that is more efficient than Windows or simply don't want to use pirated software (and don't have tons of money) then by all means considered Linux as your alternative. Remember, you have a choice (despite Microsoft efforts to make you believe otherwise).

That's right, boys and girls. As of today I have finally erased Windows from my computer once and for all!

Hail to the open source and GNU/Linux! As for M$, I hope that we may never have to cross path again, ever!
